Collegiate Peaks Scenic & Historic Byway. Colorado's newest designated byway leads visitors to a unique set of characteristics only found in this area. The rich history of Chaffee County and the Upper Arkansas Valley can be experienced on every segment of the Collegiate Peaks Byway, from the 14,000+ foot peaks rising above the valley floor to the nationally recognized historic structures scattered throughout the county.
Arkansas River. Colorado is a mecca for river enthusiasts. Crystal clear streams feed nascent rivers that ramble across white-capped mountain valleys and tumble down boulder choked granite gorges. What sets Chaffee County apart from everywhere else, is the relationship we have with the Arkansas River. The Ark played a key role in the early history and exploration of this nation and settlement of this Valley. It inspired a history of rafting and kayaking that's still evolving. The river draws us to work and play and inspires our art. Join us in enjoying, celebrating and cherishing this great river.
Rocky Mountains. If wealth were measured vertically, Chaffee County would be the richest little county in the country. Fifteen of Colorado's 54 highest peaks, those taller than 14,000 feet - aka Fourteeners - reside here in south central Colorado. On a clear day, expansive views from the summits of these behemoths stretch to Colorado's borders with New Mexico, Wyoming and Utah. Veteran peak baggers know the best way to improve odds for a successful summit include getting a pre-sunrise start, pack lots of water, dress in layers, stick to established trails and turn back immediately if bad weather approaches. Some peaks require specialized mountaineering gear - do your homework.
